Ever since I got into this art, I've never been completely satisfied with the name used to describe what we do. Magicians have their own word to describe what they do. Then there's good names like skateboarding, snowboarding, skiing, bartender, etc. People immediately understand what those words mean.
However, what we do isn't that well known to the public yet. Go up to somebody and say you do card flourishes. I'm sure you've done it already. Most people just don't know what that means. You could say cross artist, but nobody outside of the magic circle will understand what that means. Sleight of hand artist and extreme card manipulator can work but they probably don't accurately describe all that you do. Neither does card shark.
I don't only do sleight of hand, I don't only do gambling tricks, and I don't only perform card magic. I also don't get a chance to play with cards on fire very often so I wouldn't call what I do "xtreme." Card stunts could work sometimes,
None of those terms are all-encompassing. If anything "flourisher" is, but what layman understands that? And the term "flourish" doesn't mean it's a magic trick. The point people have been making is that when magicians hear the word "flourish" they think it has to do with magic.
I'm all for using a term that doesn't make people immediately think of pure magic
This is why I propose the term "cardistry." It's short, quick, and makes sense. People know the word "artistry" and they know what a deck of cards is. For those that don't know what "artistry" means, here's a definition I picked off of the dictionary:
quality of effect or workmanship
I'd say that's very fitting. Plus, it's all-encompassing. You are performing an art. Both Cardist (sounds like artist) and Card Artist work very well. Nobody will question you there.
You'll definitely be seeing this word being used around Decknique in the future. I'm also not proposing this just so Decknique can have a trademark name on a term (look who's trying to register "xtreme card manipulation" as a trademark.) I think this will help everybody out to accurately describe what they do, and make the art recognizable to the public by putting a memorable name to the art.
